Xiaojie Xu's Biography

Professor Xiaojie Xu has worked in the petroleum industry since 1983 and is a renowned speaker on Chinese energy policy; he has particular expertise in investment, corporate strategy and governance.

From 1983 through 2009, Xu worked at the China the National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), where he served as the first Director of Institute of Overseas Investment Climate Research (2000-09). He advised CNPC, China State Energy Bureau, CNOOC and some other state owned energy companies on doing business abroad.

Xu is currently Chair Fellow at the Institute of World Economics and Politics of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing, where he has directed the World Energy Research Project since April 2009. Xu also advises a variety of Chinese national oil companies, energy service firms, professional associations and research institutes domestically and abroad.

Xu also serves as the Chief Professor of the Institute of Geopolitics and Energy Economics at the East China Normal University, Shanghai. He has been a lead expert in numerous Chinese and English professional consulting reports and research papers. He has also contributed many chapters to books, and is the author of “Petro-Dragon’s Rise: What It Means for China and the World” (2002). His latest book, “Energy Black Swan: Global Games for Hydrocarbon Resources and Chinese Options”, was released in 2011.
