Asaf Savas Akat's Biography

Professor Asaf Savas Akat is a Turkish economist and academic. He began his career in 1966, at Istanbul’s Faculty of Economics, following his education at Istanbul University (BSc; PHD) and The University of East Anglia (MA, Economics). From 1980 to 1982, he was their Professor of Economics, before taking up a position lecturing at the Marmara University, Istanbul. In 1993, he was reinstated as Professor of Economics at Istanbul University and in 1996, he became Rector of Istanbul Bilgi University.

Asaf Savas Akat has also acquired many important roles in professional life. In Turkey, he has acted as Chairman to many major companies, including IMTAS Insurance. Additionally, he is an accomplished writer, having published numerous papers and three books on economic issues. He has also served as columnist for daily Sabah and Vatan newspapers.

Asaf Savas Akat famously argued in one of his columns in Vatan (November, 2011), ‘’Monetary politics and financial stability’’, that developed countries led by the US used to have a monopoly on economic theories and practices. He believes that the global crisis has changed this immensely, and that developing countries such as Turkey have begun to seize the initiative.

Asaf Savas Akat’s wealth of experience in the field of economics has afforded him the ability to offer valued advice for companies to thrive in today’s unpredictable markets. He is a charismatic speaker who offers highly developed rhetoric skills, in addition to his insight.
