Rodrigo de Rato's Biography

Rodrigo de Rato is a Spanish politician who held several senior positions in Spain before going on to become the International Monetary Fund’s Managing Director in 2004.

During his time at the IMF Rodrigo promoted a strong global financial system, fought against poverty and increased the role of the IMF in developing economies.

In his capacity as Spanish Minister of Economy, Rodrigo was also Governor for Spain on the Boards of Governors of the IMF, the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, the European Investment Bank, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Rodrigo earned a law degree in 1971 from the Universidad Complutense in Madrid, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of California at Berkeley in 1974. In 2003, he earned a PhD in Economics from the Universidad Complutense.

His current appointments include being Senior Managing Director of Lazard Bank and member of the Management Boards of both La Caixa and Banco Santander.
