Cheryl Einhorn's Biography

Cheryl Einhorn helps organisations transform ambiguity into advantage. An award-winning investigative journalist turned decision-science entrepreneur, she founded Decisive and created the AREA Method—an evidence-based framework that controls for cognitive bias, clarifies incentives, and drives confident choices. Cheryl honed the system during two decades breaking stories for The New York Times, Foreign Policy, Barron’s and Harvard Business Review, where rigorous fact-finding was mission-critical.

Today the AREA Method powers high-stakes deliberations across sectors: Goldman Sachs merchant bankers use it to assess capital commitments; U.S. State Department counter-terrorism teams employ it to build trust between rival factions; Columbia Business School students deploy it to evaluate investments. Wherever complexity and consequence intersect, Cheryl equips leaders with a repeatable, scalable process for sound judgment.

She is the author of four influential books on decision-making: Problem Solved (2017), which tackles personal and professional choices; Investing in Financial Research (2018), which applies the system to markets; Problem Solver (2023), which introduces Problem-Solver Profiles; and The Human Edge: Smarter Decisions in the Age of AI (2026), which calls for leading AI with human agency.

A long-time educator, Cheryl teaches decision-making at Columbia University and Cornell Tech, leads global workshops, and delivers a widely viewed TED Talk. On stage she helps audiences diagnose their decision style, stress-test assumptions, and embed a culture of thoughtful inquiry—leaving teams ready to solve their toughest problems with clarity and conviction.

Cheryl Einhorn's Speaking Topics

  • Beyond Delegation: Cultivating Ownership in Decision Culture

In this talk, we explore how leaders can move past short-term delegation and build a lasting culture where decision ownership becomes the norm. We’ll look at how to design decision domains, coach for judgment instead of compliance, and calibrate autonomy for growth—bridging the gap between “what should I delegate?” and “what decision authority should my team have?”

  • Optimizing Human Judgment with AI Capabilities

Your decisions are the only thing you truly have control over –how you choose matters and AI can’t or won’t know those things: only you do. But with the right understanding of how to make decisions with AI, you will remain your own Chief Decider and use AI as your powerful assistant.

  • When Your Inner Voice Lies To You

As humans, our inner voice is one of the most precious instruments of truth we have. Or so we’re told. In this talk you’ll learn why you might want to reconsider the honesty of your inner voice because it could be lying to you. How would you know? This talk lays out a specific approach for verifying what your inner voice says and strengthening it to better guide your future.

  • Building Organizational Excellence Through Leadership Choices

What makes great leaders? This talk shows how the path to high performance is paved not just by sweeping strategic moves, but by the everyday decisions leaders make — and how they make them. Designed for executives and senior teams, the talk reveals how thoughtful, question-led decision processes can reduce noise, clarify direction, and build a culture of accountability and trust.

  • Deciding Differently: A Journey Beyond The Comfort Zone

Most of us know how we like to make decisions and rely on the same decision-making process, regardless of the challenge. It doesn’t matter if we are choosing a car or making a career choice. But with such diverse decisions, this one-size-fits-all approach limits our potential. It's time to journey beyond our comfort zone, abandon autopilot and embrace flexibility.

  • Investing In Strategic Financial Decisions

What’s the intersection between decision-making and investing? It’s the way a decision-making process is applied to financial sleuthing. This talk goes beyond the numbers to explore how stronger decision-making processes lead to smarter financial outcomes. For corporate executives, the challenge isn’t just choosing between options — it’s asking the right questions, managing uncertainty, and avoiding common decision traps. This talk equips leaders with a practical, repeatable framework to clarify complex choices, align stakeholders, and improve both speed and quality in financial decisions.

  • In Uncertain Times, Ask These Questions Before You Make a Decision

In today’s perma-crisis world, waiting for stability is like waiting for a train that’s never coming. When everything around you feels unsteady, Cheryl offers questions that can serve as strategic tools to help you work through ambiguity, reframe risk, and strengthen your decision-making muscles.
