Saifedean Ammous's Biography

Saifedean Ammous is a bestselling author, professor and one of the most well-respected economists in the world. He has a keen interest in Austrian economics and free markets, offering a unique perspective on the world, having grown up in Lebanon during its civil war. His work on Bitcoin and cryptocurrency has made him a household name in the financial sector. As a public speaker, his speeches focus on economics, bitcoin, and the history of money. He is an expert in these fields, and his insights are sought by audiences everywhere.

In 2019, Saifedean founded Saifedean.com, where he serves as CEO and host of The Bitcoin Standard podcast, discussing current affairs, Austrian Economics and bitcoin. He also serves as a Visiting Scholar at Columbia University Center on Capitalism and Society. He spent more than a decade at Lebanese American University, joining the institution in 2009 as a Lecturer in Economics until his departure in 2019 as an Associate Professor of Economics. Saifedean began his career as a Teaching Assistant before his promotion to university Instructor, teaching a PhD dissertation course at Columbia University. He was also a Visiting Scholar for the University’s Center on Capitalism and Society.

Saifedean is a pioneer in the economies of cryptocurrencies and their potential to change the world for the better. He’s the author of The Bitcoin Standard (2018), introducing the economies of bitcoin and later expanding on the framework in The Fiat Standard (2021). He’s also authored a textbook, Principles of Economics, currently in progress.

Saifedean has featured in major media outlets, including Forbes, Bitcoinist, The New York Times, Bitcoin Magazine and Markets Insider.

After obtaining a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering at the American University of Beirut, Saifedean completed a Master of Science in Development Management at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He also holds a PhD in Sustainable Development from Columbia University.

Saifedean is a commentator on economic, social and political affairs. As a keynote speaker, he is sought-after for his insights that have helped shape our understanding of money, digital currencies and their role in society.
