Laurence Kotlikoff's Biography

Economist Laurence Kotlikoff received his B.A. in economics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1973 and his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University in 1977. He previously served on the faculties of UCLA and Yale and was a senior economist with the President’s Council of Economic Advisers. He is CEO of Economic Security Planning, Inc., which markets economics‑based personal financial planning software.

Kotlikoff’s research is extraordinarily broad, spanning three major areas: The Global Macroeconomic Transition—technological, demographic, and fiscal; Economic Policy—tax and transfer systems, pensions, finance, banking, healthcare, climate, and inequality; and Personal Finance. He has been named by The Economist as one of the world’s 25 most influential economists. In 2016, Kotlikoff ran for U.S. president as a write‑in candidate. His platform, “You’re Hired,” is posted at Kotlikoff.net.

Kotlikoff is the author or co‑author of 21 books and hundreds of academic articles. His op‑eds have appeared in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, Bloomberg, the London Times, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, and other leading global media outlets. Kotlikoff’s Substack newsletter, Economics Matters, has over 160,000 subscribers.

Kotlikoff’s Money Magic won the 2022 SABEW award for best book in investing and personal finance. Get What’s Yours (with Philip Moeller and Paul Solman) was a runaway New York Times best seller. His research findings have been featured in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, PBS NewsHour, Yahoo.com, and other major media.

Kotlikoff has consulted for the Federal Reserve, the IMF, the World Bank, the OECD, and numerous governments and corporations around the globe. He has testified numerous times to congressional committees.

His company’s MaxiFi Planner raises, sustains, and protects households’ living standards in accordance with the fundamentals of finance. Bankrate named MaxiFi “Best Financial Planning Software of 2025.”
