John Gieve's Biography

Sir John Gieve KCB joined the Civil Service in 1974, and has served in a number of departments, principally at the Treasury. He was private secretary to three Chancellors and rose to head the directorates responsible for the Budget, public services, and financial regulation before serving as Permanent Secretary at the Home Office for five years (2001-05).

He was Deputy Governor of the Bank of England from January 2006 until February 2009. As a result, he was a key player in the UK’s response to the credit crisis, and efforts to stabilize the UK and international banking systems during the 2008/9 financial crisis.

John is currently Chairman of VocaLink, the main provider of payment systems to banks in the UK and Europe, an independent director of CLS, the world’s forex settlement system, and of Morgan Stanley International. He is also a trustee of Nesta, the innovation charity, and a director of Homerton Hospital.
