Michael Portillo's Biography

Michael Portillo is one of Britain’s best-known broadcasters, political commentators and former Cabinet ministers. Drawing on decades of experience at the highest levels of politics, media and public life, he delivers engaging, insightful perspectives on leadership, economic policy, geopolitics and navigating change.

Michael began his Cabinet career as Chief Secretary to the Treasury under Prime Minister John Major in 1992. Two years later, he was appointed Secretary of State for Employment before becoming Secretary of State for Defence, where he was responsible for an annual budget of £22 billion. Following the Conservative government’s defeat at the 1997 General Election, Michael lost his parliamentary seat before returning to the House of Commons in 1999 as Shadow Chancellor under William Hague. After unsuccessfully contesting the Conservative Party leadership in 2001, he remained a prominent figure in British politics before leaving Parliament in 2005.

Since then, Michael has built an acclaimed second career as a broadcaster, bestselling author and journalist. Best known as the presenter of the hugely successful Great British Railway Journeys and its international spin-offs, he has travelled extensively, exploring history, politics and culture while bringing global events and complex issues to life for audiences around the world.
