Mark Nitzberg's Biography

Dr. Mark Nitzberg is an AI scientist, entrepreneur and leading expert on artificial intelligence governance, AI safety and the societal impact of intelligent technologies. He serves as Executive Director of the Center for Human-Compatible AI (CHAI) at the University of California, Berkeley, where he works at the forefront of research into building AI systems that are safe, trustworthy and aligned with human values.

Mark began studying artificial intelligence in the early 1980s before earning a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Harvard University under renowned mathematician David Mumford. Throughout his career, he has combined pioneering AI research with entrepreneurial leadership, founding and building technology companies applying artificial intelligence to healthcare, finance, computer vision and data analytics. He has also held senior roles at Bell Laboratories, Microsoft and Amazon, where he served as Director of Computer Vision Products following Amazon’s acquisition of Blindsight Corporation, a company he founded.

Today, Mark advises governments, businesses and international organisations on the opportunities and challenges presented by artificial intelligence. His work focuses on helping leaders navigate AI governance, responsible innovation and the strategic implications of rapidly advancing technologies. He also serves as Interim Executive Director and co-founder of the International Association for Safe and Ethical AI (IASEAI), supporting global collaboration on AI safety and governance.

Mark is the co-author of The AI Generation: Shaping Our Global Future with Thinking Machines, which explores how artificial intelligence is transforming business, society and global power, and Solomon’s Code: Humanity in a World of Thinking Machines, which examines the profound ethical, social and philosophical questions raised by increasingly intelligent machines.
