John Sterman's Biography

John Sterman is an author, professor and one of the world’s leading business simulation and decision analysis experts. As a keynote speaker, he has addressed global audiences on improving organizational performance by understanding and managing system dynamics.

As one of the most influential management thinkers today, John is the Director of the MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative and the MIT System Dynamics Group. He is a long-standing professor at MIT Sloan School of Management, serving as a Jay W. Forrester Professor of Management and a Professor in the MIT Institute for Data, Systems, and Society. He also serves at the New England Complex Systems Institute as a co-teacher.

For the last four decades, John has worked to improve our understanding of how organizations operate and learn from each other and has written extensively on the topic. In Business Dynamics (2000) and Modeling for Learning Organizations (1994), he shares insights about model-building with dynamic yet stable data systems.

He is an influential figure within management education whose research has been featured in many media outlets and publications, including the Washington Post, New York Times, Boston Globe, Business Week, Fortune, the Financial Times, and NPR Marketplace.

John is recognized for his many accomplishments inside the classroom and for illustrating the impending consequences of climate change. In addition to twice winning the Jay W. Forrester Prize for outstanding published work in system dynamics, he also holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Lugano, Switzerland. John has earned seven honours from MIT students for his outstanding teaching, and BusinessWeek Guide to the Best Business Schools named him one of MIT Sloan’s “Outstanding Faculty” in appreciation of his contributions to business education innovation. Furthermore, he is an inducted fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
