John Kay's Biography

Professor John Kay is a leading British economist who chaired a review of the performance of equity markets for the UK government, released in July 2012.

John’s career has spanned academic work and think tanks, business schools, company directorships, consultancies and investment companies. He is currently a visiting Professor of Economics at LSE and a Fellow at St John’s College, Oxford. His interests focus on the relationship between economics and business, with an emphasis on banking regulation.

After ten years as a tutorial Fellow in Economics at the University of Oxford he established the Institute for Fiscal Studies, a respected think tank, and London Economics, a consultancy business which he spent ten years building before selling his interest. Since then, his main interests have been writing about economics in a weekly column in the Financial Times and a series of books, of which the most recent have been “The Truth about Markets” (2003), “The Long and the Short of It” (2009) and “Obliquity” (2010).
