Daniel Yergin's Biography

Daniel Yergin is a highly respected authority on energy, international politics, and economics. He serves as Vice Chairman of S&P Global and chairs CERAWeek, which CNBC has described as “the Super Bowl of world energy.”

Time Magazine said, “If there is one man whose opinion matters more than any other on global energy markets, it’s Daniel Yergin.” Fortune calls him “one of the planet’s foremost thinkers about energy and its implications.” The New York Times has named him “America’s most influential energy pundit.”

A Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Yergin has written books that define the global energy conversation. His latest, “The New Map: Energy, Climate, and the Clash of Nations,” earned a Kirkus designation as “required reading — another winner from a master.” Beyond writing, he has built and led major institutions as Vice Chairman of S&P Global, one of the world’s largest research and information companies with 16,000 employees. He also founded Cambridge Energy Research Associates, which became part of IHS in 2004 and then S&P Global in 2022.

Yergin’s honors reflect the breadth of his contributions. He received the United States Energy Award for “lifelong achievements in energy and the promotion of international understanding.” The Alliance to Save Energy presented him with the Charles Percy Award for Public Service. In 2012, the International Association for Energy Economics recognized him for “outstanding contributions to the profession of energy economics and to its literature.” The University of Pennsylvania awarded him the first Carnot Prize for “distinguished contributions to energy policy.”

Four consecutive presidents have called on Daniel Yergin to serve on the US Secretary of Energy Advisory Board. He also sits on the Energy Policy Council of the Dallas Federal Reserve. Among his many leadership roles, he serves as a director of the Council on Foreign Relations and a senior trustee of the Brookings Institution. Additional memberships include the National Petroleum Council, the United States Energy Association, and the US-Russia Business Council. He also sits on advisory boards at MIT’s Energy Initiative, Columbia University’s Center on Global Energy Policy, and Singapore’s International Energy Advisory Board. The International Gas Union recognizes him as a “Wise Man,” and India’s Ministry of Petroleum counts him among its Think Tank members.

Yergin holds a BA from Yale University, where he founded The New Journal, and a PhD from Cambridge University, where he was a Marshall Scholar.
