Alan Sugar's Biography

Lord Alan Sugar is one of the Europe’s best-known business figures, entrepreneurs and media persons.  Alan Sugar is a remarkable speaker for audiences with an interest in business, and technology.

Lord Sugar founded Amstrad in 1968 which grew from a general importer/exporter to a specialist in consumer electronics. By 1970, it began manufacturing in the early days of personal computing launching the highly successful Amstrad CPC 464 in 1984. The company continued under Lord Sugar’s control until 2007 when it was sold to BskyB for about £125m.

Lord Sugar has since founded Amsair (1993), chartering business and executive jets; owns Amsprop (2007) a property company; owns and chaired Viglen Ltd (1994-2009) and from 1991-2007 was the majority owner of Tottenham Hotspur football club.

Lord Sugar is best known as the star of BBC’s BAFTA award winning show “The Apprentice”.  In 2022, he featured in it’s 16th season on prime time tv.

In 2000, Lord Alan Sugar was knighted for his services to business and he holds two honorary Doctorates of Science degrees, awarded by City University and Brunel University respectively.

Having previously sat on the Business Council for Britain and fronted a campaign promoting the benefits of apprenticeships, in 2009 he was named as Enterprise Champion and appointed to the House of Lords as Baron Sugar of Clapton in the London Borough of Hackney.

Lord Sugar is a philanthropist for a number of charities including Great Ormond Street Hospital and Jewish Care.
