Kazumasa Iwata's Biography

Kazumasa Iwata is a Japanese economist, currently serving as President of the Japan Center for Economic Research, a Tokyo based publicly-owned research institution conducting research on economic, financial and fiscal policy. He is also a member of the Council on National Strategy and Policy, a government body directly reporting to the Japanese Prime Minister.

Previously, he was President of the Economic and Social Research Institute at the Cabinet Office and Deputy Governor of the Bank of Japan. From 2001 to 2003 he was Director General in charge of economic assessment and policy analysis at the Cabinet Office.

A prominent academic who has been Emeritus Professor of the University of Tokyo since 2007, he won the “Economist Prize” for his book Banks’ Behaviour and Monetary Policy (1981), co-authored with Koichi Hamada. He was Professor of Economics at the University of Tokyo from 1986 to 2001. In 1988 he was Visiting Professor at Alberta University and Visiting Fellow at Yale University.
