Edwina Dunn's Biography

Edwina Dunn is a pioneering data scientist, entrepreneur and keynote speaker who has helped define how organisations use data to understand people. In 1989, she co-founded dunnhumby, building a business that transformed retail and consumer goods through customer insight, including the creation of Tesco Clubcard—now celebrating 30 years—and other global loyalty programmes. By the time Tesco acquired dunnhumby in 2011, it had grown to 1,500 people and reached 350 million customers in 25 countries.

A trusted voice on the responsible use of data, Edwina has served on UK government boards shaping how data is used in society, including the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation (board member since November 2018; Deputy Chair since November 2020) and the Geospatial Commission. She has also invested in the next generation of predictive algorithms through her work as Chair of Starcount, helping organisations translate fast-moving digital signals into clearer decisions.

Today, Edwina leads The Female Lead—an educational foundation and global campaign with 8.7 million followers—using research, storytelling and practical models to challenge bias and widen opportunity. She is the author of When She’s in the Room: How Empowering Women Empowers the World (HarperCollins, 2024), bringing data-backed insight and human stories together to help leaders build workplaces where talent thrives.
