Arthur Laffer's Biography

Arthur Laffer is a globally influential supply-side economist, shaping debates on tax and growth worldwide. Best known for the Laffer Curve, he demonstrated how tax rates shape revenue, incentives and growth. Widely described as the “father of supply-side economics”, he helped catalyse a worldwide tax-cutting movement in the 1980s and remains a central voice in fiscal policy debates today.

Laffer served as chief economist at the US Office of Management and Budget (1970–1972) and sat on President Ronald Reagan’s Economic Policy Advisory Board from 1981 to 1989, influencing landmark pro-growth tax reforms. He is founder and chairman of Laffer Associates and the Laffer Center, advising governments, US states and global businesses on designing tax and regulatory systems that unlock investment, innovation and jobs. His impact has been recognised with honours such as the Hayek Lifetime Achievement Award (2016), the American Legislative Exchange Council’s Laffer Award for Economic Excellence (2017) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2019).

A prolific author, Laffer has co-written widely discussed books including The End of Prosperity, Return to Prosperity, An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of States, Trumponomics and Taxes Have Consequences, each offering clear frameworks for understanding how incentives drive long-run prosperity. His 2024 volume The Trump Economic Miracle: And the Plan to Unleash Prosperity Again extends that analysis into today’s debates on growth, inequality and the future of US economic policy. On stage, he blends rigorous data, historical perspective and vivid case studies—drawing on an active lecture schedule through 2024–2025—to help boards, executive teams and conference audiences assess tax and spending proposals, anticipate policy shifts and position their organisations for resilient, long-term growth.
