Charles Bean's Biography

Sir Charles Bean is one of Britain’s most respected macroeconomists. As Deputy Governor for Monetary Policy at the Bank of England (2008–2014), he steered the Monetary Policy Committee through the global financial crisis and early recovery, shaping quantitative easing strategy and crisis-era communications. Earlier, he served as the Bank’s Executive Director and Chief Economist (2000–2008).

During his tenure, he represented the UK at G7 and G20 finance meetings and sat on both the Monetary Policy and Financial Policy Committees, bringing rigorous analysis to high-stakes decisions. He also helped design forward guidance and stress-testing regimes now emulated by central banks worldwide.

An academic by training, Bean has been Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics since 1990, led the Royal Economic Society (2013–2015), and, from 2016 to 2021, served on the board of the Office for Budget Responsibility, delivering an independent review of UK economic statistics.

Knighted in 2014 for services to monetary policy and central banking, he now advises governments, corporates, and investors worldwide on the outlook for inflation, interest rates, and economic resilience. Drawing on decades of research in macro-modelling and labour markets, his commentary features regularly in international media and at leading economics forums.

On stage, Bean combines frontline policy experience with the clarity of a seasoned educator. He demystifies central-bank thinking, challenges conventional wisdom, and equips audiences with practical frameworks to navigate an uncertain global economy.
