Mattias Klum's Biography

Mattias Klum, a renowned environmental photographer and filmmaker who has spent decades capturing the beauty and fragility of the natural world. He has been a pioneering figure in conservation and wildlife photography since his early twenties. His stunning visual narratives, featured in prestigious publications like National Geographic have inspired global awareness and action towards environmental preservation.

Klum’s journey into photography began in his teenage years as he had already embarked on expeditions to document the natural world. His work is characterized by its vivid imagery and compelling storytelling, which not only highlights the beauty of ecosystems but also the urgent need for their protection. He has been working as a full-time photographer since 1985. Over the years, Mattias’ photographs have brought global attention to endangered species and threatened habitats, playing a crucial role in conservation efforts. In addition, his photography has been displayed at prestigious museums and art galleries across continents, as well as at major international events like the UN Climate Change Conference and the Shanghai World EXPO. His most recent solo exhibition was held at Fotografiska in Stockholm from 2020-21.

In 1997, Klum became one of the youngest photographers to have his work published on the cover of National Geographic. This milestone catapulted him into international acclaim and set the stage for a career dedicated to environmental advocacy. His work has been featured in numerous renowned publications including Wildlife Conservation, BBC Wildlife, and the New York Times. Mattias’ projects have also taken him to some of the most remote and ecologically significant regions on earth from the rainforests of Borneo to the Arctic tundra.

Beyond photography, Mattias has directed and produced numerous documentaries that explore critical environmental issues. His film “The Coral Eden” released in 2011, won accolades for its breathtaking depiction of marine life and the threats posed by climate change. His dedication to conservation is further evidenced by his role as a Fellow of the National Geographic Society at Stockholm Resilience Centre, where he collaborates with scientists and policymakers to promote sustainable development.

Klum’s influence extends into academia and public speaking, where he is an international lecturer sharing his experiences and insights on biodiversity and sustainability. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the Honorary Doctorate in Natural Science from Stockholm University and the King’s Medal from the King of Sweden, recognizing his contributions to environmental education and conservation.

He is the author of “Borneo Rain Forest” published in 1998 which details the plants and wildlife of the Borneo rain forest. He also co-authored many books including “The Human Quest: Prospering Within Planetary Boundaries,” which has made significant contributions to the discourse on sustainability.
