Joseph Press's Biography

Joseph Press, Ph.D. is Full Professor and Program Head of Strategy + Management at the School of Design, Shanghai University of Engineering Science. He is Associated Partner at the Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies (CIFS), Research Advisor at the Institute for the Future, and China Foreign National Expert at Donghua University. Based in Shanghai, he brings a firsthand vantage on China’s AI ecosystem to leadership teams navigating AI-driven transformation. He was formerly Director at Deloitte Digital CH, where he led global digital transformation projects, and Visiting Professor at Politecnico di Milano. He holds a Ph.D. in Design Technology from MIT.

His forthcoming book, Agentic Creative Intelligence: Designing With AI to Reclaim Human Agency (Routledge, 2026), introduces the Creative Council — a model in which the human practitioner leads and AI collaborates, so computational reach extends rather than replaces human judgment. Earlier titles include Designing Sustainable Futures (Routledge, 2024), A Design Driven Guide for Entrepreneurs (Routledge, 2023), Office Shock (Berrett-Koehler, 2023), and IDeaLs (Emerald, 2021).

Joseph speaks on the intersection of AI, futures, design, and leadership across four signature topics, working with executives, entrepreneurs, and institutions through advisory engagements, executive education, and keynote presentations.

Joseph Press's Speaking Topics

  • Agentic Creative Intelligence: AI-Human Collaboration for Accelerated Innovation

Generative AI now produces fluent output at scale, yet most organizations conflate computational reach with creative judgment. Drawing on his forthcoming book Agentic Creative Intelligence (Routledge, 2026), Joseph introduces the Creative Council — a model in which the human practitioner leads and AI collaborates across the arc from intent to artifact. Working from Shanghai, where adoption curves run weeks ahead of Western markets, he shows how design-led teams use agentic systems to accelerate ideation without ceding authorship, taste, or accountability. Executives leave with a working language for delegating to AI, a structural map of the Creative Council, and concrete protocols for embedding the model in product, strategy, and operating teams.

Best for: C-suites, innovation leaders, design and product organizations, AI transformation offices.

  • Augmented Foresight for Strategic Impact

Strategic planning cycles have not kept pace with the rate at which AI reshapes markets, supply chains, and policy. Drawing on Designing Sustainable Futures (Routledge, 2024) and his work with the Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies and the Institute for the Future, Joseph shows how generative AI extends scenario simulation, signal scanning, and policy forecasting from quarterly exercises into continuous practice. Leaders see how augmented foresight surfaces weak signals earlier, stress-tests strategy against plausible futures, and links foresight to operational decisions on a horizon executives can actually own. Sessions blend frameworks, China-vantage case material, and live demonstration of futures workflows that participants can put to work the following week.

Best for: corporate strategy and foresight functions, public-sector planners, sustainability leadership, board offsites.

  • The One Person Company: Design-Driven Entrepreneurship in the AI-Native Era

The economics of starting a venture have shifted. A single founder now commands the operational reach that once required an entire team, provided they design the company around AI from the first day rather than retrofitting later. Joseph’s One Person Company (OPC) framework, building on A Design Driven Guide for Entrepreneurs (Routledge, 2023), maps how solo and small-team founders compose AI agents, design partners, and human collaborators into a coherent operating system. Participants leave with a design canvas for an AI-native venture, criteria for sequencing human and agent capacity, and case material from China and Europe where the OPC pattern is already producing market traction.

Best for: founders and accelerators, corporate intrapreneur programs, business schools, family-office portfolio events.

  • AI Integration for Systemic Transformation

Over half of digital transformations underperform because technology outpaces organizational readiness. AI raises the stakes: when AI sits at the core of every offering, process, and function, partial integration produces partial results. Drawing on two decades of enterprise consulting, including his time as Director at Deloitte Digital, Joseph reframes transformation as a systemic redesign rather than a stack upgrade. Leaders learn how to sequence AI integration across product, operations, talent, and governance; how to build the organizational metabolism that converts AI capability into measurable performance; and how Chinese firms — operating under different constraints — are demonstrating integration patterns that Western executives can adapt.

Best for: boards, C-suites, transformation offices, CIO/CTO summits, industry leadership conferences.

  • Collective Intelligence for Future-Ready Leadership

When people and AI learn to think together, leadership development becomes the proving ground for organizational performance. Joseph shows how corporate universities, executive education, and leadership academies can be redesigned around collective intelligence — cohorts of leaders working alongside AI agents to confront real strategic problems in real time. The talk integrates research from his time at the Center for Creative Leadership and current practice with multinational L&D functions. Audiences leave with a redesign blueprint for executive education, criteria for selecting AI partners for leadership work, and case material on what happens when human cohorts and AI cohorts learn in the same room.

Best for: CLOs, corporate-university heads, business school deans, leadership academies, L&D summits.
