Anil Gupta's Biography

Dr. Anil K. Gupta is a world leading expert on strategy, globalisation and entrepreneurship with a doctorate from the Harvard Business School, and a B.Tech. from the Indian Institute of Technology at Kanpur. Ranked by Thinkers50 as one of the world’s “most influential living management thinkers” and featured by The Economist as one of the world’s “superstars” in “Innovation in Emerging Economies”. With such renowned prestige, Anil is one of the only 3 professors in the world to have been elected by his peers as a Lifetime Fellow of the Academy of Management, Strategic Management Society, and the Academy of International Business. He is the Michael D. Dingman Chair in Strategy, Globalisation and Entrepreneurship and Distinguished Scholar-Teacher at the Smith School of Business, The University of Maryland.

The UK-based HotTopics has named Dr. Gupta as one of the world’s most “influential professors of entrepreneurship” and he has been honoured with the ‘Best Professor in Strategic Management award” from CMO Asia. Anil has also been recognised by BusinessWeek as an Outstanding Faculty, he has had an induction into the Academy of Management Journals’ Hall of Fame and has been listed by Management International Review as a “North American Superstar” for his research in strategy and organisation. Anil is a regular participant at the World Economic Forum summits. He is also a member of the Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Emerging Multinationals.

The author, co-author and co-editor of several highly acclaimed books, including: The Silk Road Rediscovered; Getting China and India Right; Global Strategies for Emerging Asia; The Quest for Global Dominance; Smart Globalisation, and Global Strategy and Organisation. Anil also has over 70 papers in leading academic journals and his book, Getting China Right was awarded the 2009 Axiom Book Awards’ Silver Prize; as one of the world’s best two books on globalization/international business. It was also shortlisted for the Asia Society’s Annual Bernard Schwartz Book Award. Anil has been published in The Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, Chief Executive Magazine, Daily Telegraph, China Daily, Economic Times, and other outlets. He has also been interviewed by Harvard Business Review, The Economist, The Washington Post, USA Today, BusinessWeek, Forbes, BBC, CNBC, Bloomberg TV, Reuters TV, New Delhi TV, CCTV China and other top-tier global media.

Alongside this, Anil is a member of the Board of Directors of Origene Technologies, which is a gene cloning company. He had previously served on the boards of Omega Worldwide (NASDAQ), Vitalink Pharmaceutical Services (NYSE), NeoMagic Corporation (NASDAQ), and TiE-DC, the premier organisation of entrepreneurs and VCs in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic region. He has also served as an advisor to the US-India Business Council.

In addition to this, he is also the Chairman of The China India Institute; a Washington DC-based research and consulting organisation. He had previously served as the INSEAD Chaired Professor of Strategy at INSEAD, and was a visiting professor at Stanford University and Dartmouth College.
