Paul Merton's Biography

Paul Merton is an English actor, writer and comedian. He is one of the UK’s most well-known and highly respected comedians. As a keynote speaker, he is sought-after for his clever and observational humour that has entertained global audiences for over 30 years.

In 2021, Paul featured in the travel programme, Motorhoming with Merton & Webster on Channel 5, where he starred alongside his wife Suki Webster touring Britain in a camper van. He’s previously travelled around Britain and North America as the host of Paul Merton’s Secret Stations and the documentary series Paul Merton’s Birth of Hollywood. He furthered his love for exploration as the presenter of Paul Merton’s Adventures, Paul Merton in China, Paul Merton in India, and Paul Merton in Europe. He was the host of Thank God You’re Here and an interim co-presenter on The One Show.
Paul’s love of comedy was influenced by early silent comedy, which can be seen in some of his projects, such as the 2006 documentary Paul Merton’s Silent Clowns and the 2007 book Silent Comedy.
Paul is perhaps best known as a panellist on Have I Got News for You and his 1988 breakthrough role on Whose Line Is It Anyway?. He later presented his own shows titled Paul Merton: The Series, Paul Merton’s Palladium Story, and Paul Merton in Galton & Simpson’s.

Along with his television mastery, Paul is also an acclaimed author who published his autobiography, Only When I Laugh, in 2014. He’s written several books, including Funny Ha Ha (2020), Silent Comedy (2007), My Struggle (1996), and Paul Merton’s History of the Twentieth Century (1993). He’s also co-authored 1989’s The Joan Collins Fan Club.

He was listed in The Guardian’s top ten list of Greatest Wits of all time, The Comedian’s Comedian top 20 list of Greatest International Comedians in History and The Observer’s The A–Z of Laughter. He’s won a BAFTA, a Broadcasting Press Guild awards and several British Comedy awards, including, Top TV Comedy Personality, Best Comedy Entertainment Personality, and Best Comedy Gameshow.

Paul is an experienced public speaker who has been engaging audiences for many years. He has given speeches and presentations on a variety of topics to audiences around the world, consistently earning rave reviews. He is considered by many to be one of the most captivating speakers alive today.
