Jon Moulton's Biography

Jon Moulton is one of the UK’s most high-profile venture capitalists. Born in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent, he overcame significant childhood health challenges, including tuberculosis and aplastic anaemia, experiences that later inspired his long-standing commitment to medical research.

Jon has over 30 years of experience investing in business turnarounds with considerable success. He is the founder and Chairman of Better Capital, the research and consultancy arm of the Better Capital Fund. After studying chemistry at Lancaster University and training as an accountant with Coopers & Lybrand, he spent several years with Citicorp Venture Capital in New York and London before founding Schroder Ventures, where he served as managing partner from 1985 to 1994. He then became Director of leveraged buyouts at Apax Partners (1994–97) before founding Alchemy Partners in 1997. He left Alchemy in 2009 to establish Better Capital.

The Jon Moulton Charity Trust, established in 2018, continues the work of his previous foundation by funding non-commercial clinical trials across a wide range of therapy areas, supporting more than 150 studies aimed at advancing patient care and relieving suffering.

An active private investor and company chairman, Jon also supports start-up businesses as an angel investor and serves on the boards of several organisations.

In 2023, Jon was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science in recognition of his outstanding success as an entrepreneur, his achievements in venture capital, and his significant charitable work through the Jon Moulton Charity Trust.
