Robert "Dr. Bob" Dempsey's Biography

Robert “Dr. Bob” Dempsey is a former NASA Flight Director, aerospace Operations Director, astrophysicist, and author who spent more than two decades leading human spaceflight operations at the highest levels of government and commercial spaceflight.

During his 17 years and 560 shifts as a Flight Director for the International Space Station, he led missions, spacewalks, spacecraft dockings, and critical real-time anomaly responses in NASA’s Mission Control Center, including major operational challenges during assembly and long-duration operation of the ISS. Dr. Bob was a foundational leader in the creation of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, designed to replace the Space Shuttle utilizing a new approach. He also played a central operational role in Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner spacecraft, supporting development from early design through flight test and mission execution, including where the operations team literally saved the spacecraft. Dr. Bob also helped to lead the ISS Science Research branch and the Transportation Office, which oversaw all vehicles to and from the station. He received NASA’s Exceptional Achievement, Outstanding Leadership, and Exceptional Service Medals.

Following NASA, Dr. Bob joined Blue Origin, where he held senior leadership positions supporting New Shepard, Orbital Reef, and advanced human spaceflight initiatives. His responsibilities included launch operations, mission systems, crew operations, mission readiness, risk management, and the development of an operational culture in emerging commercial space programs.

Today, Dr. Bob is the owner of Galileo Astrea LLC, where he provides consulting, writing, and speaking services focused on leadership, crisis management, operational excellence, and the future of human spaceflight.

His keynote presentations combine gripping behind-the-scenes stories from Mission Control with practical lessons on leading teams under pressure, navigating uncertainty, and sustaining performance in complex organizations.

Dr. Bob also speaks openly about succeeding with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in elite technical and leadership environments, offering audiences a candid perspective on resilience, adaptation, and unconventional paths to achievement.
