Tanya Byron's Biography

Professor Tanya Byron is a consultant clinical psychologist, writer and broadcaster whose work bridges frontline mental health practice, public policy and the media. She specialises in child and adolescent mental health and writes a widely read weekly advice column for The Times, bringing clinical clarity to everyday challenges.

Commissioned by the UK Prime Minister to lead an independent review into children’s online safety, Tanya authored Safer Children in a Digital World (2008) and its 2010 progress review—landmark reports that reshaped guidance for government, education and industry. Her evidence-led frameworks help organisations build resilience and wellbeing while managing digital risk with realism and care.

An accomplished communicator, she has fronted high-profile programmes including Little Angels and The House of Tiny Tearaways, as well as The Truth About Child Sex Abuse (2015) and The Truth About Improving Your Mental Health (2021). She also co-hosts the award-winning podcast How Did We Get Here? with Claudia Winkleman, opening up nuanced, practical conversations about family dynamics and mental health.

Tanya served as the inaugural Chancellor of Edge Hill University (2008–2018) and has been recognised with multiple honorary doctorates for contributions to science, education and culture. Recent engagements include EWIB (Empowering Women in Business) 2025, where she equips leaders and teams with strategies for psychologically safe, high-performance cultures. On stage, she blends rigorous insight with compelling storytelling to deliver practical tools audiences can use immediately.
