Muhammad Yunus's Biography

Nobel Laureate, Professor Muhammad Yunus is the father of both social business and microcredit, the founder of Grameen Bank, and of more than 50 other companies in Bangladesh.  For his constant innovation and enterprise, Fortune Magazine named Professor Yunus in March 2012 as “one of the greatest entrepreneurs of our time.”

In 2006, Professor Yunus and Grameen Bank were jointly awarded Nobel Peace Prize.  Furthermore, he is the recipient of 61 honorary degrees from universities across 24 countries.

He has received 136 awards from 33 countries including state honours from 10 countries. He is one of only seven individuals to have received the Nobel Peace Prize, the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom and the United States Congressional Gold Medal. Prof. Yunus has appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, Newsweek and Forbes Magazine.

Prof. Yunus has published three best selling books –  ‘ A World of Three Zeroes: the New Economics of Zero Poverty, Zero Unemployment, and Zero Carbon Emissions ‘ (2018) and ‘Building Social Business: The New Kind of Capitalism That Serves Humanity’s Most Pressing Needs‘ (2010) and ‘Creating a World Without Poverty: Social Business and the Future of Capitalism‘ (2007)

Prof Yunus was educated at Dhaka University and was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study economics at Vanderbilt University. In 1972 he became head of the economics department at Chittagong University.
