John McCarthy's Biography

John W. McCarthy is a strategist, speaker, and political commentator known for bringing clarity, civility, and strategic insight to some of the most consequential political battles.

As a senior advisor for Political Engagement to President Joe Biden—both on the campaign trail and in the White House—John has been at the center of shaping national political engagement at the highest levels. He played a key role in Biden’s 2020 campaign as deputy national political director and went on to serve in the administration as a principal political advisor, building coalitions and managing critical relationships with business leaders, elected officials, and political stakeholders in all 50 states.

A seasoned campaign and Capitol Hill veteran, John has served in senior roles with Hillary for America, Obama for America, and the Democratic National Committee. He was previously chief of staff to Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-PA) and a policy aide to Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), where he worked behind the scenes to help shape influential committees and legislative priorities.

Today, as Principal at Causeway Strategy GroupJohn counsels candidates, companies, and causes on how to navigate public life.

Since 2025, he has served on the Executive Committee of the Democratic National Committee. 

He is an inaugural senior fellow at Georgetown University’s Initiative for Catholic Social Thought and Public Life.

A native of New Jersey and graduate of The Catholic University of America, John is a regular voice on the future of the Democratic Party and the role of civility in American politics. He was named for Forbes’ 30 under 30 and is a frequent media contributor on CNN, MSNOW, BBC, FOX, CBS, and ABC.
