Jim Al-Khalili's Biography

Jim Al-Khalili is a leading voice in contemporary science, celebrated for his remarkable ability to present complex theories in an engaging and accessible manner. A Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Surrey, he has authored 14 popular science books, including “The World According to Physics,” which was shortlisted for the Royal Society Book Prize, and “The Joy of Science,” published in 2022. Widely recognized for bridging the gap between cutting-edge research and mainstream audiences, Jim has earned a reputation as one of the UK’s most influential science communicators.

Through his long-running BBC Radio 4 program, “The Life Scientific,” he has interviewed many of the world’s top thinkers, delving into scientific breakthroughs and their real-world implications. His dedication to public engagement has garnered multiple honors, including an OBE in 2007 and a CBE in 2021 for “Services to Science.” In February 2025, he was awarded the Darwin Day Medal by Humanists UK, recognizing his exceptional contributions to public understanding of science. Additionally, he is scheduled to deliver the prestigious Unwin Award Lecture at The Royal Institution on April 1, 2025.
