Christos Stylianides's Biography

Christos Stylianides is a distinguished European statesman who has served on the frontlines of crisis leadership, climate governance, and humanitarian diplomacy. With a career spanning the highest levels of national and European Union politics, he has earned a global reputation for his principled leadership and his ability to forge effective, resilient solutions to complex challenges. From confronting the Ebola epidemic in West Africa to pioneering the EU’s modern civil protection system and navigating Greece’s response to the climate crisis, he brings a unique blend of vision, integrity, and practical, on-the-ground action. Today, he stands as a compelling voice of reason in an age of disruption – a speaker who connects decades of experience with tomorrow’s solutions.

Born in Nicosia, Cyprus, Christos Stylianides began his career as a dental surgeon before entering public service. His early political life was marked by a rapid ascent, serving twice as the Government Spokesperson of the Republic of Cyprus (1998-1999 and 2013-2014) and as an elected Member of the Cypriot House of Representatives from 2006 to 2013. During his parliamentary tenure, he was deeply involved in European affairs, contributing significantly to Cyprus’s successful EU accession. It was during this formative period that he established his unwavering commitment to ethical governance; in 1999, he resigned from his post as Spokesperson on a matter of principle related to a political corruption case, an act of integrity that has defined his career and cemented his reputation as a champion of public trust.

His expertise in navigating complex political landscapes led to his appointment as European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management (2014-2019). In this role, Mr. Stylianides was thrust onto the world stage to manage some of the decade’s most pressing emergencies. In 2014, he was appointed the European Union’s Ebola Coordinator, a critical role in which he personally traveled to the frontlines in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea. There, he pioneered a new, agile response strategy focused on supporting frontline health workers and deploying smaller, mobile teams to fight the outbreak. He possesses unparalleled, first-hand expertise in global health security, outbreak containment, and international crisis governance. His tenure at the Commission is perhaps best defined by his role as the chief architect of rescEU, the ambitious program that upgraded the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. A tangible symbol of EU solidarity, rescEU created a common European reserve of resources – from firefighting aircraft to medical supplies – to respond to disasters. He was also a leading voice on migration policy and a passionate advocate for Education in Emergencies, work for which he was recognised as a “Political Champion” by the Malala Fund.

In 2021, Mr. Stylianides was called to serve the Hellenic Republic, becoming Greece’s first-ever Minister for the Climate Crisis and Civil Protection. Tasked with overhauling the nation’s response to escalating natural disasters, he implemented a new strategic doctrine centered on the triad of prevention, preparedness, and resilience. His proactive, governance-first approach focused on building robust early warning systems, enhancing cross-sectoral cooperation, and fostering a culture of public awareness to better protect communities from wildfires, floods, and other climate-related threats.

Since September 2023, he has served as Greece’s Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy. In this capacity, he oversees one of the world’s most vital shipping industries, leading policy on everything from maritime security and the resilience of global sea lanes to the critical challenge of decarbonisation. His work focuses on positioning Greece as a leader in the transition to green shipping, balancing economic imperatives with climate compliance and leveraging diplomacy to foster cooperation across the Mediterranean.

Mr. Stylianides’s extensive policy experience is complemented by a deep commitment to academia, having acted as Visiting Professor in Practice at the London School of Economics (LSE) Department of Health Policy, and being a Faculty Member at the University of Nicosia Medical School.
