Carme Artigas's Biography

Carme Artigas is one of Europe’s leading voices on artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and ethical technology governance. A globally recognised entrepreneur, policymaker, and technology strategist, she brings a unique perspective shaped by decades at the forefront of innovation, business leadership, and international AI regulation. From advising the United Nations on the future of artificial intelligence to shaping Europe’s digital agenda, Artigas offers audiences invaluable insight into the opportunities and risks defining the next technological era.

As Co-Chair of the AI Advisory Board at the United Nations Office of the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Technology, Artigas plays a central role in developing strategic recommendations on the governance and responsible use of AI. She also serves on the advisory board of the Europe Startup Nations Alliance (ESNA), helping strengthen Europe’s position within the global innovation ecosystem. Recognised by O’Reilly Media as one of the world’s most influential women in data, she is widely respected for combining technical expertise with a forward-thinking understanding of public policy and business transformation.

Artigas co-founded and led Synergic Partners, one of Spain’s first Big Data companies, building a team of more than 150 data scientists and delivering international projects across multiple industries. Following Telefónica’s acquisition of the company in 2015, she continued as CEO until 2018, helping accelerate the organisation’s global data and AI capabilities.

From 2020, Artigas served as Spain’s Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, where she spearheaded the country’s Digital Agenda, National AI Strategy, National Cybersecurity Plan, and Digital Rights Charter. In 2024, she became the first Spaniard appointed as a Senior Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center, contributing to international dialogue on the ethical development of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.
