Andy Baynes's Biography

Andy Baynes is an investor in innovation and start-ups, entrepreneur, sustainability expert and former Apple and Google Executive. He was also the founding head of Nest’s business development group.

Andy has over 18 years of experience working on pioneering environmentally friendly technologies in the consumer electronics and IT sector. He has had a number of innovations patented as well as articles published in environmental and energy publications.

He is the CEO of Global Talent, through which he serves as an advisor to early-stage technology companies. He is also a guest lecturer at the Saïd Business school, and has previously lectured at Stanford, Berkely Haas and Middlebury Institute for International Studies.

Andy joined Nest as a start-up in 2012, and starting with the revolutionary Nest Learning Thermostat he developed a channel of over 100 enterprise partners, helping take Nest towards a $3.2 billion acquisition by Google. In his five years at the company Andy helped expand Nest to over fourteen countries across Europe and North America. Nest has rapidly become one of the world’s most recognised energy efficiency smart home technologies on the market.

Andy held the post of Director of Environmental Technologies at Apple where he instigated the industry’s first product design strategy for environmental excellence. He worked very closely with Steve Jobs, and achieved several industry firsts including the elimination of toxic chemicals, the set up of free take-back and recycling programs, and the integration of Life Cycle Assessment in product development. His extensive knowledge and experience in product development and innovation was rewarded by obtaining the Energy Star certification across all products.

During his time at Apple, he worked on both the iOS and Mac product range. His focus lay heavily on materials used, material development, sustainability, removing toxic chemicals and making more energy efficient, recyclable versions. By combining his innovative product design expertise with sustainability, this led Apple to become the first company to deliver green environmental performance through product design.

With over 22 years experience in the consumer electronics and IT sector, Andy has patented a number of innovations. He has also published several articles in both environmental and energy publications.

Andy Baynes is an expert in sustainable and environmentally friendly design through his experience in several of the world’s most pioneering technology companies. He also serves as an advisor to early stage technology companies. He has received the 2010 GEELA Award for Environmental Design excellence, and Clean production Action’s Green Chemistry Award.
