David Miles's Biography
Professor David Miles, CBE, is Professor of Financial Economics at Imperial College London. He previously held academic positions at Birkbeck College, University of London, and at the University of Oxford. He holds undergraduate and master’s degrees from Oxford University and a PhD from the University of London.
He is a member of the Budget Responsibility Committee of the Office for Budget Responsibility, where he leads on economic analysis, and serves on the Commission of the Central Bank of Ireland. From May 2009 to September 2015, he was a member of the Monetary Policy Committee at the Bank of England. His work has focused on the interaction between financial markets and the wider economy, and he previously served as Chief UK Economist at Morgan Stanley from 2004 to 2009.
In 2004, Professor Miles led the UK Government’s review of the mortgage market. In 2018, he completed a review for HM Treasury on reference prices for UK government bonds. He has also acted as an adviser to the International Monetary Fund and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.
Professor Miles is a Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and the CESifo Research Institute in Munich. He has written extensively for academic journals and regularly contributes to public debate and media commentary on a wide range of economic issues.
He was awarded a CBE in January 2016 for services to economics.
