Eiji Maeda's Biography
Eiji Maeda is a highly respected economist and financial policymaker, with more than 35 years of experience at the heart of Japan’s central banking system. As President and CEO of the Chiba Bank Research Institute, he delivers authoritative insight into economic policy, financial markets and global monetary trends, shaped by decades of leadership at the Bank of Japan.
Prior to joining the Institute in June 2020, Maeda spent his entire career at the Bank of Japan, where he rose to become Assistant Governor from 2016 to 2020. During this time, he played a pivotal role in steering monetary policy and overseeing financial market operations, including the development of key measures to address the economic shock caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Between 2016 and 2018, he was responsible for international affairs, representing the Bank at G7 and G20 meetings, as well as IMF and Financial Stability Board plenaries, contributing to high-level global economic dialogue.
Earlier in his career, Maeda served as Director-General of the Financial Markets Department (2015–2016) and the Research and Statistics Department (2011–2015), where he led critical analysis of Japan’s economic conditions and market developments. He also worked closely with central bank leadership as Senior Secretary to Governor Masaaki Shirakawa from 2010 to 2011, gaining unique insight into monetary decision-making at the highest level.
Maeda holds a BA in Economics from the University of Tokyo and an MA in Economics from Northwestern University.
