Professor Tim Congdon CBE is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading monetary economists and one of the UK’s foremost analysts of inflation, banking and economic policy. Over several decades he has played a significant role in debates on monetary policy, financial stability and the relationship between money supply and economic growth. He is widely recognised as Britain’s leading exponent of the monetarist school of thought.

Tim began his career as a journalist at The Times before moving into the City of London in 1976 as an economist. In the late 1970s and early 1980s he became influential in defending the principles of “Thatcherite monetarism”, arguing that control of the money supply was essential to reducing inflation and stabilising the British economy.

In 1989 he founded Lombard Street Research, a macroeconomic consultancy that became one of the City of London’s most respected sources of economic analysis. He established the firm after correctly warning that excessive money growth during the Lawson Chancellorship would lead to double-digit inflation.

Between 1992 and 1997 Tim served on the UK Treasury Panel of Independent Forecasters, known as the “Wise Men”, advising the government on economic policy and the outlook for the British economy. During this period he emphasised the importance of monetary variables in determining macroeconomic outcomes.

A prolific author and commentator, Tim has written extensively on monetary theory and policy. His books include Money and Asset Prices in Boom and Bust, Central Banking in a Free Society, Keynes, the Keynesians and Monetarism, Money in a Free Society, and Money and Inflation at the Time of Covid.

He is the Founder and Chairman of the Institute of International Monetary Research at the University of Buckingham, established to study the relationship between money and national income.
