George Eaton's Biography

George Eaton is the New Statesman’s Senior Editor (politics) and Chief Leader Writer. Based in Westminster, he is renowned for his columns and features offering the inside track on the Labour government. Over the last year he has interviewed cabinet ministers including Foreign Secretary David Lammy, Health Secretary Wes Streeting, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband and Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds.

He also writes the Morning Call briefing three times a week to more than 57,000 subscribers and edited the New Statesman’s Left Power List and Right Power List. As well as the politics of the Labour government, his pieces cover policy areas including US-UK relations, Europe, China, net zero and the British economy.

George returned to Westminster in 2024 having previously edited the New Statesman’s award-winning website. He served as political editor from 2014-18, covering events including the Brexit referendum and the Scottish independence referendum. His interviewees have included Francis Fukuyama, Nassim Nicholas Taleb, Christopher Hitchens, Michael Sandel and Steven Pinker.

He has contributed to the Times, the Sunday Times and the Evening Standard and appeared on BBC News, Sky News, the Today programme, Newsnight and PM.

George previously worked at PoliticsHome.com and graduated from Warwick University with a first-class degree in history and politics.
