Stephen M. Walt's Biography

Stephen M. Walt is one of the world’s leading scholars of international relations. He is the Robert & Renée Belfer Professor of International Affairs at Harvard Kennedy School, where he has taught since 1999 and served as Academic Dean (2002–2006). He previously held faculty appointments at the University of Chicago and Princeton University, enriching his classroom with hands-on policy insight.

A defining voice in realist thought, Walt developed the influential “balance-of-threat” theory and received the Edgar S. Furniss National Security Book Award for The Origins of Alliances (1988). His subsequent works—Taming American Power (2005), The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy (2007, New York Times bestseller translated into 24 languages), and The Hell of Good Intentions (2018)—continue to shape strategic debate in capitals worldwide.

Walt earned a BA with distinction in International Relations from Stanford University (1977) and an MA and PhD in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley (1983). He has been a Guest Scholar at Brookings, a Resident Associate at the Carnegie Endowment, and a visiting professor in Singapore and Sydney, reflecting a truly global perspective. Elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2005 and honored by the ISA as Distinguished Senior Scholar in 2014, he also serves on the board of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft.
