Alexandra Hall's Biography

Alexandra Hall is a former British diplomat with over 30 years experience, fulfilling numerous demanding roles in London – including as Head of the Human Rights Department, Head of policy on the Middle East Peace Process, Head of UN Humanitarian Affairs covering refugees, migration, international humanitarian law and war crimes, and as a European Union expert in the Cabinet Office (equivalent to the US’s National Security Council), as well as overseas, in Bangkok, Bogota, New Delhi, Washington and Tbilisi, where she was Ambassador from 2013-2016. She also worked within the US government for two years from 2002-2004 on detachment from the British Government, first on human rights and Middle East policy in State Department, and then in the Pentagon as part of the unit working on Iraq reconstruction.

Her final diplomatic posting was as Brexit spokesperson at the British Embassy in Washington from 2018-2019, a position from which she resigned after concluding that she could no longer represent the government’s positions on Brexit with integrity. Since her resignation, she has become a well-known commentator, analyst and writer on domestic and international policy matters, and ethics in government policy, as well as a motivational speaker on lessons learned in the world of diplomacy.    She has also taught at George Washington University, lectured at State Department’s diplomatic academy, been a Fellow at the Atlantic Council think tank, co-hosted a Podcast ‘Disorder‘, and been a Board Member on numerous non-profit foundations.

As a result of having spent many years on both sides of the Atlantic, in the process acquiring US citizenship, Alex likes to claim she knows how to speak “American” as well as English, and has learned to explain British and European developments to American audiences, and vice-versa, in engaging, compelling terms to which they can relate.
