Beatrice Weder di Mauro's Biography

Beatrice Weder di Mauro, Ph.D. is a Swiss economist renowned for her extensive expertise in international macroeconomics, international finance, sustainable finance, and impact investment. As an eloquent speaker and prolific writer, she frequently speaks and pens op-eds on these topics, engaging in public policy debates and contributing to leading academic journals.

Currently, Dr. Weder di Mauro holds multiple prestigious positions: she is a Professor of Economics at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, a Research Professor and Distinguished Fellow-in-residence at the Emerging Markets Institute of INSEAD Singapore, and a Senior Fellow at the Asian Bureau of Finance and Economic Research (ABFER). She has been serving as the President of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) since 2018.

Dr. Weder di Mauro is a trailblazer, the first woman and non-German to serve on the German Council of Economic Experts from 2004 to 2012. This prestigious council advises the German government on economic matters, and during her tenure, she had the opportunity to counsel former German Chancellors Gerhard Schroeder and Angela Merkel. Her boardroom experience extends to major corporations such as UBS, Roche, and Tyssen-Krupp. Currently, she serves on the board of Unigestion and Robert Bosch GmbH.

Her early life and education started in Guatemala, where she spent her childhood before returning to Switzerland at sixteen. This contrast in living standards ignited her interest in economics. She completed her high school diploma in Basel in 1984. She continued her education at the University of Basel, receiving her Doctorate in Economics in 1993 and Habilitation in Economics in 1999.

With a distinguished professional history, Dr. Weder di Mauro’s roles have included serving as an economist at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, Research Fellow-in-residence at the United Nations University in Tokyo, Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Basel, and Professor of Economics, Economic Policy, and International Macroeconomics at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, Germany. She has also held visiting positions at Harvard University, the National Bureau of Economic Research, and the United Nations University in Tokyo.

Among her many roles, she has served on the Swiss Federal Commission on Economy in Bern (2002-04) and has been a fellow at the CEPR since 2003 and a senior fellow at ABFER in Singapore since 2016. She has collaborated with several international organizations as a consultant, including the International Finance Corporation, World Bank, IMF, United Nations University, European Central Bank, OECD Development Centre, and the European Commission.

Dr. Weder di Mauro was also a member of the European Regional Advisory Group of the IMF in Washington, D.C. (2010 to 2012), chaired the Global Agenda Council on Sovereign Debt at the World Economic Forum, and served as a member of the Expert Group on Debt Redemption Fund and Eurobills of the European Commission from 2013 to 2014.

Between 2016 and 2020, she served as a Senior Fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation, where she worked on various papers, from studying Singapore’s housing policy to research related to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

In 2020, she was appointed by the World Health Organization’s Regional Office for Europe to serve as a member of the Pan-European Commission on Health and Sustainable Development, chaired by Mario Monti. This diverse and distinguished career trajectory highlights Dr. Weder di Mauro’s outstanding contributions to economics and international finance, positioning her as a highly sought-after speaker and influential figure.
