Paul Myners's Biography

Lord Paul Myners is a leading UK business man who has worked in the financial sector since 1974.

From 1987 to 2001 he was Chairman of Gartmore, the asset manager, during which period the funds managed by Gartmore rose from £1.2bn in 1985 to £75bn in 2001.

He went on to be Chairman of Marks and Spencer (2004-06) and Chairman of the Guardian Media Group (2006-08), publisher of The Guardian and The Observer newspapers, and Chairman of Land Securities Group (2006-08), the largest quoted property company in Europe at that time.

Paul served as the Financial Services Secretary (sometimes referred to as City Minister) in HM Treasury from 2008 to May 2010. He stepped down at the 2010 General Election.

In 2013, Paul was appointed as director to the board of the Cooperative Group, but stepped down in April 2014 amid fierce opposition to his proposed reform. Despite this, he will continue with his original purpose to review the 160-year-old group’s governance and democracy. Paul is also on the Board of Trustees at ARC.
