Richard Clarida's Biography

Richard Clarida is a sought-after economic and policy expert, speaker and prolific writer who regularly contributes to top-tier global publications. He has given keynote addresses at major conferences worldwide, where he provides a unique perspective on today’s most pressing issues and is sought after by global leaders in business, finance, government, and academia.

In 2018 Richard was elected to the second highest officer on the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System – Vice Chair of the Federal Reserve, serving in this position until early 2022. Before the Federal Reserve appointment, Richard served at one of the largest global investment management firms, PIMCO, as a Global Strategic Advisor from 2006 to 2018. From 1988 to 2018, he served as a C. Lowell Harriss Professor at Columbia Univerisity, teaching Economics and International Affairs and presiding over the economics department for over four years. Along with his academic background, Richard served as Chief Economic Advisor on economic policy to the United States treasury secretaries in the early 2000s and on the Council of Economic Advisers as a Senior Staff Economist.

The G7 Current Account Imbalances: Sustainability and Adjustment, the Journal of Applied Financial Economics, and the NBER International Seminar on Macroeconomics are just some of the publications and research papers that Richard contributed to and published.

In 2003, he was honoured with the Treasury Medal for his contributions to economic policy, and the University of Illinois awarded him the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Alumni achievement award.
Richard is an associate on the Council on Foreign Relations and a former National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) member, serving as co-editor of their International Macroeconomics Annual.

Richard holds two degrees from Harvard University – a Doctor of Philosophy and a Master of Arts – and a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the University of Illinois.
