Fabien Cousteau's Biography

Fabien Cousteau is a leading Aquanaut, Oceanographic Explorer, Environmental Advocate and Keynote Speaker. He is Founder of Fabien Cousteau Ocean Learning Center.

He is the grandson of Jacques-Yves Coustea, a famous French naval officer and oceanographer. Fabien grew up around water; he spent many hours on his grandfather’s ships, Calypso and Acylone, and first learnt to scuba dive at age four.

As an Aquanaut, Fabien broke the world record for the number of days spent living underwater. As part of Mission 31, he spent 31 days in ‘Aquarius’, the world’s only underwater marine lab in Florida. The purpose of the mission, which took place on the 50th anniversary of his Grandfather’s original underwater living experiment, was to raise awareness for ocean conservation.

Fabien Cousteau is well-known for his study of sharks, a creature he is fascinated by. He collaborated with National Geographic as an Explorer-at-Large on a TV special titled ‘Attack of the Mystery Shark’. Fabien wanted to alter public perception of sharks. With CBS, he produced ‘Mind of a Demon’, a documentary in which he immersed himself in the shark world by building a 14-foot, 1,200 pound lifelike shark submarine called “Troy”. This enabled him to capture a rare view of the mysterious and misunderstood creatures.

Alongside his father, Jean-Michel Cousteau and sister, Céline, he was part of a series for PBS called ‘Ocean Adventures’, inspired by his Grandfather’s famous 1978 PBS Series ‘The Cousteau Odyssey’.

Fabien is Founder of the Fabien Cousteau Ocean Learning Center (OLC), which aims to protect and preserve our oceans and marine habitats through education and research. He dedicated many hours to OLC initiatives and is passionate about delivering projects that make a difference. He is a member of several charitable boards and supports communities worldwide to restore local water ecosystems.

Fabien Cousteau has appeared frequently on television, including Gayle King, the Oprah Winfrey Show and NBC’s Today Show. He has also made appearances on ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, CNN and France 2, amongst others.
