Matthew Pottinger's Biography
Matt Pottinger is CEO of Garnaut Global, an open-source research firm focused on China that serves asset managers and corporate clients. He is also a distinguished visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution. His book, The Boiling Moat: Urgent Steps to Defend Taiwan, was published in July.
Pottinger served as U.S. Deputy National Security Advisor from 2019 to 2021, where he coordinated the full spectrum of national security policy. Prior to that, he was the National Security Council’s Senior Director for Asia, leading the administration’s work on the Indo-Pacific region and helping shape its shift in China policy.
Before his White House service, Pottinger worked as a reporter in China for Reuters and The Wall Street Journal in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He later served as a U.S. Marine, completing three combat deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan between 2007 and 2010.
Following active duty, he led Asia research at Davidson Kempner Capital Management, a multi-strategy investment firm based in New York.
