Peter T. Leeson's Biography

Peter T. Leeson is the Duncan Black Professor of Economics and Law at George Mason University. He is the author of six books, including the award-winning The Invisible Hook: The Hidden Economics of Pirates, which has been translated ten times, Anarchy Unbound: Why Self-Governance Works Better Than You Think, and WTF?! An Economic Tour of the Weird.

Big Think listed Leeson among “Eight of the World’s Top Young Economists.” He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Formerly, he was a Visiting Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago, a Visiting Fellow in Political Economy and Government at Harvard University, and the F.A. Hayek Fellow at the London School of Economics.

Leeson appeared in the award-winning documentary Stolen Seas and in the Netflix series Explained. His studies have been featured in The Economist, The New Yorker, and media outlets across the globe. A YouTube adaptation of Leeson’s Invisible Hook has been viewed nearly five million times.
