Lou Marinoff's Biography

Professor of Philosophy at The City College of New York, Lou Marinoff is widely regarded as the world authority on applying philosophical traditions – from ancient Greece to East Asia – to the problems of everyday life.

He is the internationally best-selling author of “Plato, Not Prozac” (1999) and more recently “The Power Of Tao” (2014), in which Lou shows how the teachings of Lao Tzu can help us overcome the everyday challenges of living in an ever-changing world. His other books include “Therapy for the Sane” (2013), “The Inner Philosopher” (2012) and “The Big Questions” (2004).

A globally-recognized thought-leader, Lou’s speaking portfolio includes the World Economic Forum (Davos), Horasis (Zurich), Biovision (Lyon), Ducere (Canberra), Festival of Thinkers (Abu Dhabi), Strategic Foresight Group (Mumbai), China Executive Leadership Academy Pudong (Shanghai), Soka Gakkai (Tokyo), and the Singapore Learning Festival. He has given keynote speeches to government agencies, corporations, private investors, professional associations, and universities around the world.

Lou has been widely published in the academic fields of rational and moral agency, ethics, philosophy of science, Chinese philosophy, Indian philosophy, Buddhism and philosophical practice. He is also the founding president of the American Philosophical Practitioners Association (APPA), and continues to edit its journal, Philosophical Practice.
