Andrew Sentance's Biography

Dr. Andrew Sentance CBE is a highly accomplished business economist who served at the heart of economic policy-making on the Bank of England MPC during the financial crisis. He speaks and writes extensively on UK and global economic issues and their implications for business strategy. He is also an expert on climate change policy and its impact on the economy and society, and on the global aviation industry.

He joined PWC as a Senior Economic Advisor after serving as an external member of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Bank of England from October 2006 to May 2011. His period of office on the MPC was dominated by the global financial crisis and its aftermath. Andrew is the second-longest serving external member of the MPC and was particularly prominent in late 2010 and early 2011 when he was arguing for an early rise in interest rates as the UK economy recovered from recession.

Before joining the Bank of England, Andrew had worked as a business economist for twenty years. From 1998 to 2006, he was Chief Economist at British Airways and was one of the five senior managers appointed in 2001 by Chief Executive Rod Eddington to prepare the company’s “Future Size and Shape” turnaround plan. During his time at BA, Andrew also had a number of broader business responsibilities, including airport policy, airport regulation, business planning and environmental affairs.

Andrew Sentance started his career as a business economist in 1986 at the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) where he was Head of Economic Policy and Director of Economic Affairs. While at the CBI, he was a founder member of the Treasury’s Panel of Independent Forecasters – established in 1992 to provide advice to the Chancellor of the Exchequer under John Major’s Conservative Government. In 1994, Andrew moved to London Business School where he was Director of the Centre for Economic Forecasting until 1998 when he joined British Airways.

Andrew is a part-time Professor of Practice at the University of Warwick, based at Warwick Business School, he holds a visiting professorship at Royal Holloway, University of London, and is a Vice-President of the Society of Business Economists. He appears regularly in the media to discuss business and economic issues.
