Nathan Myhrvold's Biography

After retiring from his position as Chief Strategist and Chief Technology Officer of Microsoft Corporation in 2000, Dr. Nathan Myhrvold founded Intellectual Ventures, a patent portfolio developer and broker in the areas of technology and energy. At Intellectual Ventures he is focused on a variety of business interests relating to the funding, creation and commercialisation of inventions. To date he has been awarded hundreds of patents and has hundreds of patents pending.

Nathan joined Microsoft in 1986, when they bought his startup company Dynamical Systems Research. Prior to that, he had been a postdoctoral fellow at Cambridge University and worked with Professor Stephen Hawking on research in cosmology, quantum field theory in curved space time and quantum theories of gravitation.

Nathan’s research has been published in scientific journals including Science and the Physical Review, and he has contributed articles to magazines including Harvard Business Review, The Wall Street Journal and Time. In 2010, he was named by Foreign Policy magazine in its list of top 100 global thinkers. Nathan is also a prize-winning nature and wildlife photographer, and a master French chef. In 2011 he published a cookbook entitled Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science of Cooking, and in 2012 he published Modernist Cuisine at Home (2012), which takes modernist cooking techniques and makes them more accessible to the home cook.
