Sam Torrance's Biography

Sam Torrance is one of the most popular and charismatic golfers on the world stage. His career has spanned over 35 years, during which he has won over 30 tournaments around the world. He continues to play on the Seniors Tour, where he finds the competition as fierce as ever and the thrill of winning just as great. Sam often takes his place in the commentary box, where he has been a regular member of the BBC at the Major golf events over the last decade.

Sam is a Ryder Cup veteran, having played in the event eight times. One of the highlights of his career was sinking the winning putt for the European Team in 1985 at the Belfry, securing Europe’s first victory in 28 years. It was fitting that this same venue played host to the most outstanding moment of his career, when he captained the European Team to victory against the USA in September of 2002.

His contribution to the game was recognised in 1996 when he was awarded an MBE. This was later complemented by an OBE in recognition of his exemplary leadership in the 2002 Ryder Cup matches. In 1996 Sam was the subject of BBC Television’s This Is Your Life, and in late 2002 the Times newspaper declared him a “National Treasure.” In August 2010 Sam released his second book, “An Enduring Passion: My Ryder Cup Years”. His latest book, “Out of Bounds: Legendary Tales From the 19th Hole”, was published in September 2012.
