Roderic Lyne's Biography

Sir Roderic Lyne was a British diplomat from 1970 to 2004, serving three times at the British Embassy in Moscow. He was the foreign affairs adviser to the Prime Minister from 1993 to 1996; ambassador to the international organisations in Geneva from 1997 to 2000; and ambassador to the Russian Federation from 2000 to 2004.

Lyne was the co-author in 2006 of “Engaging with Russia” (a report published by the Trilateral Commission) and has written numerous articles about Russia. He was Deputy Chairman of the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House (2007-16); a member of the Iraq Inquiry Committee (2009-16); Director of Accor; adviser to HSBC (2004-06), BP (2004-09), and JP Morgan (2006-19); Director and then Chairman of Petropavlovsk plc (2007-20).

In his earlier career, Sir Roderic served in the Soviet Union, Senegal and at the UK Mission to the United Nations in New York, as well as in the Soviet and Rhodesian departments of the Foreign Office and as Assistant Private Secretary to the Foreign Secretary, Lord Carrington. From 1986-87 he was a Visiting Research Fellow at Chatham House.
