Richard Thaler's Biography

Richard Thaler is a keynote speaker and American economist who is co-author (with Cass Sunstein) of the global best-seller “Nudge: Improving Decisions about Health, Wealth, and Happiness” (2008). This book lays out key concepts of behavioral economics that can be used to tackle many of society’s major problems. In 2017, he was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his contributions to behavioral economics.

Richard is the Ralph and Dorothy Keller Distinguished Service Professor of Behavioral Science and Economics at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He is perhaps best known as a theorist in behavioral finance, and for his collaboration with Daniel Kahneman and others in further defining that field. Richard is also the Director of the Center for Decision Research and is the co-director (with Robert Shiller) of the Behavioral Economics Project at the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Richard is a board member and principal at Fuller and Thaler Asset Management, whose objective is to use their understanding of human decision-making to find mispriced stocks and earn superior returns. He also serves on the academic advisory board of Allianz Global Investors, and writes as a columnist for the New York Times News Service, in an effort to find economic solutions for some of America’s financial woes.

Richard is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Fellow of the American Finance Association and the Econometrics Society, and in 2015 will serve as the President of the American Economic Association.
