Richard Crisp's Biography

With a prolific academic record and the discipline’s highest accolades and awards, Richard Crisp is established as one of the UK’s most dynamic, distinctive, and distinguished behavioural scientists. His scientific contributions have provided new insights into how society shapes our behaviour, beliefs, attitudes, and values.

His most recent book is The Social Brain: How Diversity Made the Modern Mind (Robinson, 2015). Here, he argues that diversity is critical to our very survival as a species, and that contact with different cultures was, and is, the essential element that fuels our creativity, innovation and growth. The book asserts that diversity was the key to our intellectual evolution and will be integral to helping us tackle the most pressing social, political and economic concerns of our time.

Richard has also published over 150 academic papers and is the author of several books including Social Psychology: A Very Short Introduction,  and the undergraduate textbook, Essential Social Psychology.

His scientific achievements have been recognised with numerous awards including the prestigious British Psychological Society President’s Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychological Knowledge as well as election to Fellow of the British Psychological Society, Academy of Social Sciences, and Association for Psychological Science.

He has blogged for the New York-based magazine Psychology Today, is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Applied Social Psychology, and was recently appointed the 50th Anniversary Chair in Behavioural Science at the Aston Business School.
