Nick Watt's Biography

Nick Watt is a highly respected political journalist whose voice has shaped public understanding of British and European affairs for more than three decades. As Political Editor of BBC2’s Newsnight, he delivers nightly updates, analysis and behind-the-scenes insights from Westminster and beyond.

Before joining the BBC in 2016, Nick was Chief Political Correspondent and European Editor at The Guardian, having earlier held positions at The Times as Political Correspondent and Ireland Correspondent. He has covered seven UK general elections, two Scottish referendums and two UK-wide referendums — chronicling changes in leadership, policy and public mood.

Since Brexit, Nick has witnessed unprecedented political turbulence: five prime ministers in succession, acrimonious debates over sovereignty and power, and the evolving relationship between Britain and Europe. He appears regularly on BBC Radio 4’s Today, The World at One, PM and The World Tonight, and presents The Westminster Hour on Sunday nights. His punchy, well–sourced commentary has earned praise from Politico’s Jack Blanchard as “always immaculately sourced and well worth a listen.”

Nick has become a sought-after moderator and event chair, bringing humour, gravitas and insider awareness to debates in politics, policy, media and governance. He helps audiences grasp not just what is happening, but why it matters — and what comes next in the story of governance, public trust and political change.
